House by the Fields
New Residential House, Brandenburg, Germany

Located at the transition between the village edge and the open countryside, the house finds its place within the landscape with quiet confidence. The single-storey building integrates naturally into the terrain and is deliberately oriented towards the surrounding fields, establishing a strong relationship between architecture and landscape from the outset.

The building volume is composed of several offset structures, creating sheltered outdoor spaces and terraces with varying spatial qualities. Interior and exterior merge seamlessly, allowing fluid and natural transitions between living spaces and the surrounding environment.

The façade is clad in charred timber (Yakisugi), giving the house a distinctive yet restrained character. Its dark, textured surface responds sensitively to changing daylight, allowing the building to appear different throughout the day. Carefully positioned openings are precisely carved into the façade, framing selected views while giving the exterior a clear architectural expression. Deeply recessed reveals further emphasize these openings, adding depth and sculptural quality to the overall composition.

Inside, an open-plan living area forms the heart of the home. Living, dining and kitchen spaces flow naturally into one another and extend towards the adjoining terraces. Large floor-to-ceiling glazing opens the interior to the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the connection between inside and outside.

The bedrooms vary in character. Alongside more compact and sheltered rooms, one suite is conceived as an open living environment with an integrated bathroom. Here, bedroom and bathroom are intentionally combined into a continuous spatial experience, creating a more generous and private retreat. Large windows further strengthen the relationship between the interior and the surrounding landscape.

The remaining bathrooms and utility spaces are clearly defined and arranged as independent functional volumes.

The result is a clear and well-structured sequence of spaces—open, flowing and communicative in the shared living areas, while becoming calmer, more intimate and differentiated within the private zones.
