HOCOMP Berlin
To meet the immense demand for school places, the State of Berlin has set itself the goal of constructing up to 60 new school buildings in the coming years. These new schools are intended not only to meet the latest pedagogical requirements but also to serve as exemplary models of energy efficiency and sustainability.
Ideally, all of this should be realized within a short planning and construction period. To achieve these ambitions, standardized building types in modular timber construction have been developed for a primary and a secondary school, which can be flexibly adapted to different sites.
From a spacious circulation core, three building sections with distinct functions extend: two student areas and a workshop area. By simply rotating and or mirroring these sections around the central circulation area, the design can be adjusted to suit various plot conditions. The classroom clusters are arranged around a generous and bright forum, with the respective homebase rooms directly adjacent.
Students can move freely within their forums and learn in different spatial settings. The rooms in the workshop wing are accessed via a traditional corridor. The façade can be clad in either metal or timber, allowing integration into the surrounding urban context.
A total of ten standardized schools will be built in Berlin by 2028.
