Integrated Secondary School Mahlsdorf
The site for the construction of the new school is located in Berlin Mahlsdorf, adjacent to a single family housing area to the north and west, and commercial buildings to the east and south.
The school building is designed as an elongated, meandering structure oriented in a north south direction. The façades of the classrooms mostly face east and west. Administrative areas and specialist rooms are arranged along the smaller façades facing north and south. The façades reflect the building’s internal functions toward the exterior. All functional rooms are provided with large operable window façades featuring vertical or horizontal divisions.
The corridor areas are enclosed with a transparent post and beam façade. All glass surfaces – except those facing north – are equipped with a full height vertical sun shading system. Opaque façade sections are clad with large format aluminium panels.
The roof areas are designed as flat roofs with extensive green roofing. The compact, ground level sports hall presents itself as two interlocking single storey volumes. The taller volume of the sports hall is surrounded by a lower volume that contains all ancillary rooms.
The rising façade is opened at the offset, forming a north oriented clerestory band for natural lighting of the hall. The façades – including those in the roof areas – are clad with aluminium trapezoidal panels, analogous to the school building. Different colour schemes distinguish the various functional areas.
